I was going to write on the topic of stigmatophilia but in my research I came across the best damn explanation right here. So what I offer instead is a peek into the upcoming Embedded.

“What’s this demonstration of,” I whispered in his ear.

“Branding.”

“What’s that?”

He seemed to think about it for a minute; “On a farm people tend to brand their cows with a hot iron. In some cases, as we’ll see tonight, the branding will be of a person. We are here to learn the proper techniques and medical aspects of the procedure.” He saw the fright on my face, “If you want to leave we can.”

I shook my head, “No. No, it’s okay. I, um, I just… Isn’t that painful?”

“I would think it’s quite painful, but some people like pain, and I’m sure many view it as a way to mark their property. Have you ever read The Story of O?”

I nodded, “Actually I just read it not too long ago.” His brows went up. I think I surprised him. “A friend said I would enjoy it. They branded O in that story I think, with Sir Stephen’s monogram.”

“Indeed.” He smiled. “What we will see tonight will be much the same.”

I nodded and swallowed hard. I wasn’t sure I could handle seeing the torture of another person.

A curtain parted and a man appeared behind a podium on the side of the staged area. He spoke at length about the proper design of branding irons as well as the care and cleaning of the instruments and body to be marked. Then the lights went down and a spotlight burned bright over the center of the stage. A woman stood hunched over a wooden sawhorse. Her wrists and ankles were tethered to the sides. There was a strap holding her down by the waist...
